Climate change advert opposition. Should we crank up the fear?

Blog-Climate-AdThere's an article in The Guardian about a recent advert released by the government (I should point out that other publications have also covered this story). Apparently the advertising regulator have received 350 complaints about the content! Read the full article for details.

Personally, one of my problems with our society's attitude to climate change is that we're not scared enough (especially on behalf of our younger generations)! Sometimes I wonder why there so few people worried and panicking! Then I remind myself how many distractions exist in the modern world. It may be an uncomfortable reality but surely it's better to instill a bit of fear in people in an effort to kick-start some personal action? Of course, there's no use scaring people on the one hand without offering support and solutions with the other. I also think getting people to think about the generations after us is an important thought to plant in people's minds.

Guardian - A post-oil world gets less sci-fi by the day

Blog-EmptyTankAshley Seager reports in The Guardian on Monday 26th October, 2009:

A post-oil world gets less sci-fi by the day

"Imagine what would happen if [oil] prices rose, say, to $300 a barrel. Or higher. Not only would it become too expensive to drive unless absolutely necessary, but food would become prohibitively expensive to transport, goods from China would be too expensive to ship, and plastics, which come from oil, would be unaffordable..."

It's good to see the mainstream media covering oil and energy scarcity but what took them so long?!

Grow Your Own Competition

GYO-Poster-Front-Page2To promote growing your own fruit and vegetables at home (what better way to reduce your food miles!), we've joined up with the Daily Echo to have a competition.  Whether you have a windowsill, a few pots on a balcony, or a big beautiful garden, we want to see what you've managed to grow (and eat!). Plus, it's a great chance to show people how much can be done in a home garden to convince even more people to start growing their own.

The three categories of Grow Your Own at Home 2009 are:

  • No Garden
  • Container Garden
  • Home Garden
