Welcome to Transition Southampton
Transition Southampton is committed to working with local communities, organisations and local government to help develop positive solutions that meet the imminent challenges of fossil fuel scarcity (‘Peak Oil’) and Climate Change. Above all, Transition Southampton has a positive vision of a resilient and sustainable future beyond the age of abundant fossil fuel energy.

AGM on January 24th

We've had tremendous  turnouts in our last two AGMs (see here for some photos of the 2009 AGM), and are planning for the same again. We'll be meeting at 7pm at the Friends Meeting House (1a Ordnance Road, just off of London Road in Southampton SO15 2AZ).  Please join us for an evening filled with homemade food, lots of exciting discussions, reports back from all of our subgroups about the past 15 months, talking to other Transition-minded folks, and elections for new coordination group members.

AGM

If you are willing to run for chair, treasurer, membership secretary, or press officer, see the role descriptions and e-mail info@ transitionsouthampton [dot] org with your name, position, and a brief (3-5 sentences) of why you would like the role.

(In case you were expecting the AGM this past October, please note that this AGM is a few months later than the others, but still within our requirements in the Constitution)

Transition Talks

Transition Southampton are running a series of talks held at the Art House that focus on practical actions that we can take to reduce our own energy usage. The topics will range from "How to live green as a family--avoiding pester power" to "Eating Local - how one couple ate locally for a month" to "Creating a green home--one experience of retrofitting" and other topics, ranging from energy to built environment to food and ethical consumerism.

Transition_Talks_imageThe talks will be the second Tuesday of the month from 7:30pm upstairs at The Art House. Our next talk will focus on small scale solar: what are solar's advantages and disadvantages, review the progress made and look forward to its part in an increasingly electricity dependent future.

At the end of each talk will be a chance to ask questions, or have a chat with other Transition-minded folks.

This is one to put in the diary, folks!

We're hoping to complement this with hands-on workshops through the year, so watch this space for more information!

If you have an idea for a talk or workshop that you'd like to see, please e-mail courses @ transitionsouthampton [dot] org with your suggestions.

apple_project_coordinators

Thanks to everyone who supported our fruit tree bulk buy project this year. Over 100 trees have been bought at cost price, which will help create a virtual orchard across the city. For more information about the project see: www.transitionsouthampton.org/trees

Ways to Get Involved

we_need_you Interested in getting more involved, but don't know how? We're looking for people who have a few hours to spare once or twice a year on stalls, to give up an afternoon running a workshop, to spend 2-3 hours a month helping to run a project, or to be part of our coordination group.
  • Come to a coordination group meeting - a great way to see what is happening currently, find out how to get involved, and take part in planning what comes next.  Check the events calendar for the next few dates.
  • If you're interested in being part of the coordination group, check out the role descriptions and offer to stand for a role. They generally require about 2-3 hours a month.
  • To join in with what the transport, food, energy, built environment or events subgroups are up to, e-mail This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it about getting involved.
  • Take a look at our jobs board to see if anything catches your eye.
  • Offer to spend a few hours on a stall. It's a great way for us to get more people involved, and raise awareness about peak oil and climate change.
  • Start up a subgroup, or run an event. We'll offer loads of help with admin, publicity, etc.
